History:
• The party’s founder is Dr. Abdelkrim AL KHATIB, who announced in 1967 the establishment of the Democratic, Constitutional and Popular Movement.
• In 1996, the party revealed its ‘Islamist’ orientations, and took part in the legislative elections a year later.
• The influence of the party on the political scene remained limited until 2002, when it became the pioneer party of opposition.
Political orientations:
The PJD is a Moroccan political Islamist party. It defines itself as an actor in the construction and development of modern, democratic and proud Morocco. The PJD supports the current system (constitutional monarchy), and recognizes the statue of Amir Al Muminin (Commander of the Faithful) as being the King.
Slogan for the legislative elections of 2007:
“Together to build Morocco of justice.”

Istiqlal Party – PI (literally “party of independence”), January 11th 1944.

History:
• The party was originally founded in 1940 under the French protectorate, to only become an official political party in January 11th in 1944, with the submission of the proclamation of independence and democracy.
• Since that date, the party benefited of some prestige, first conveyed by its charismatic leader Allal EL FASSI, then by its struggle for the return of the late King Mohamed V from his exile in Madagascar.
Political orientations:
The Istiqlal Party is a nationalist and conservative monarchist party that defends the label of “Greater Morocco” (full territory including the Western Sahara). It is also a member of the Centrist Democrat International.
Slogan for the legislative elections 2007:
“Together for the construction of Morocco to face the future”.
